Elisaveta Bagriana

Gergiovden

Born 1913 in Sofia. Written verse for some time before Iordan Iovkov published her first poems in 1915. Considered one of the best women poets in the Bulgarian literature. A leading member of the Zlatorog group in the interwar period. Since 1944, especially during the Stalin era, modified her poetry to suit current conditions. After 1963 went back to her more personal poetry of the pre-1944 period. Became a poetry editor of the literary journal Septemvri.
Her world is at once modern and traditional, and in any case feminine. In this regard she may be associated with the Russian poetesses Anna Akhmatova and Marina Cvetaeva, some of whose work she has translated. A major component of her outlook is a cult of yourh. Her obsession with freedom appears in several forms, one of which transcends in her spirit of wanderer and her passion to the sea. Another characteristic of Bagriana is her simultaneous attracation to and repuslion from many aspects of modernity, coupled with a deep- sense of history and eternal human values.
