One of the most prolific Bulgarian writers and poets and the first recognized classic of the new Bulgarian literature. His master piece Pod igoto (Under the Yoke) was crated in the 1880's, and is compared to Tolstoi's Voina i mir. The Epopeia na zabravenite was Vazov's master piece in poetry. Most of the poems in the Epopeia are dedicated to individuals, but they are always depicted against the background of the Bulgarian nation.

 Bratya Miladinovi

Popeyte mi krasni makedonski devi,

Popeyte mi vashte nevinni pripevi,

Vtqknete si kitki, pratete mi klik,

Na vashiya kqrshen i zvuchen yazik.

Treperyayki sladko az shte da vi slisham,

I kqm vas ste fqrkam i shte da vqzdisham

Vedno s tiha Struma, vedno s mqtnii Drin,

Vedno s eka jalnii, shto prashta Pirin;

Letete, ehtete, pesni makedonski,

Pechalni kat pesni na bryag vavilonski

...

Letete, o pesni, spomeni golemi,

Vqzdishki posledni na bivsheto vreme!

Peyte gi, devici, pri Pind i pri Shar,

Peyte gi pri Struga, grad hubav i star,

Deto se rodiha dvata Miladina,

Na Makedoniya dvata verni sina.

...

Na zaranta rano tqmnichniya svod

Oglasiha dumi: milost i jivot!

A bednite bratya v predsmqrtni stradan'ya

Izpushtaha svoite posledni stenaniya.

I, veche obseti ot grobniya hlad,

Te prashtaha sbogom na bojiya svyat,

I shushnyaha tiho s gasneshta sila:

"Kak mnogo te lyubim, Bqlgariyo mila!"
