Khristo (Izmirliev) Smirnenski

Born on September 17 (29), 1898 in Kukuš, Macedonia. The father participated in the activities of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO). In 1908-10, Khristo moved to Sofia to live with his grandfather (a priest) and his uncle (a poet). After the death of his grandfather returned back to Kukuš. The aniimosity of the Balkan Wars forced the family to immigrate to Sofia. Financial hardship and the spirit of the post World War I period introduced him to the leftist movements. In 1920, he joined the Communist Youth League. Parallel to prolific poetry, he created journalist articles, feuilletons, and actively participated in the tumultuous political life of the early 1920s. Died of tuberculosis on June 14, 1923.

Nij

Nij vsichki sme deza na maikata zemja,

no chuzhda e za nas kqrmjastata i grqd,

i v shemetnia krqg na zemnia si pqt,

zhaduvaiki lqchi, ugasvame v tqma -

Nij, bednite deza na maikata zemja.

Krai nas se vie bich, nad nas tezhi homot

i robskia zakon na zhqltia metal;

nij rasnem v nishteta, nij gasnem sred pechal

i rqsim v svoja drum sqlzi i kqrvav pot -

nij bledni smqrtnizi - rodeni za zhivot.

A nij sme okean ot ogneni vqlni,

velichestven kervan kqm svetli visoti;

chrez nashite sqrza vselenata tupti,

zhivota se krepi na ramenete ni,

no nij sme okean ot steneshti vqlni.

Na zemnite blaga vsevechni sme tvorzi,

a nuzhda ni dushi do hladnata si grqd.

Pod chernite krila na debnestata smqrt

privezhdame chela sqs trqneni venzi -

nij, vechnite tvorzi, nij, mornite borzi...

No ide den na sqd! Nad maikata zemja

nadvisva uragan i v gromkia mu zov

preplitat se v edno omraza i ljubov,

a maikata zemja vqzsepva se sama,

potqpkala greha, otqrsila srama.

Zastoto v boen red sred robskata tqma

vqzbuneni vqlni izdigat se sqs rev,

zastoto nakipja sveshtenia ni gnev

i negovia vik stozvuchno zagqrmja:

"I nie sme deza na maikata zemja!"
